27살에 세계 소믈리에 경기대회에서 우승한 이탈리아의 소믈리에 엔리코 베르나르도(Enrico Bernardo)는 와인을 여행이라고 한다. 우리는 와인을 마시면서 프랑스의 보르도에 대해서, 이탈리아의 피에몬테에 대해서 이야기한다. 간접적인 여행을 하고 있는 셈이다. 엔리코의 말에 쉽게 공감할 수 있다.

그러나 황금을 찾고 새로운 수맥을 찾는 사람은 사실 와인을 마시는 사람보다 와인을 수입하는 수입사들에게 더 어울리는 표현이라고 생각한다. 프랑스, 이탈리아, 스페인에서 황금이나 수맥을 찾는 일은 비교적 수월하다. 많은 수입사들이 그 길을 가기 때문에 경쟁이 치열할 뿐이다. 반면에 예를 들어 동유럽 국가의 와인을 수입하는 경우에는 다르다. 참으로 어려운 길을 선택한 것이다. 남이 가지 않은 길이나 드물게 찾는 길을 가는 것이다. 그것이 얼마나 힘든지는 쉽게 짐작할 수 있다. 헝가리, 체코, 슬로베니아 같은 중부유럽의 와인을 수입하는 경우도 다르지 않다.

우리는 동유럽과 중부유럽을 비롯해 아직 널리 알려지지 않은 와인 산지의 와인을 발굴하고 알리는 일에 깊은 관심과 열정을 가지고 있다. 이러한 활동은 단순한 와인 홍보에 그치지 않고, 그 와인이 탄생한 토양과 역사, 사람들의 이야기, 그리고 지역의 문화적 맥락을 이해하고 이를 교육 자료로 풀어내는 데에도 초점을 둔다.

주류 시장의 중심에서 벗어난 산지를 직접 탐구하며, 생산자와 와인 업계 종사자, 그리고 소비자를 지식과 경험으로 연결하는 것이 우리의 역할이라고 믿는다. 이러한 여정 속에서 우리는 스스로를 "Wine Explorer"라고 소개한다. 익숙함을 넘어 미지의 와인 세계로 향하며, 와인 속에 담긴 깊이와 다양성, 그리고 인간의 이야기를 발견하는 탐험가이기 때문이다.

하지만 우리의 활동은 아직 널리 알려지지 않은 와인 산지의 와인에만 관심이 있는 것은 아니다. 기존에 잘 알려진 와인 산지의 와인을 새로운 시각으로 접근하고, 와인 업계에 등장하는 새로운 얼굴들에게 소개하는 역할에도 큰 관심을 갖고 있다.
